Commonly Asked questions

  1. 1.I’ve never climbed before, can I just come in and start climbing?

  2. Yes! You have 2 options if you have little to no climbing experience. You can Boulder or take our Safety and Belay Class to Top-rope.

  1. 2. Does everyone need to complete a waiver to climb at your facility?

  2. Yes, everyone is required to complete a Risk and Release Form prior to climbing. All participants under 18 years of age MUST have their parent or court appointed guardian sign the waiver before they can climb. Legal guardians must bring proof of their guardianship. No exceptions can be made.

3. It is my first time climbing, what should I wear?

  1. Wear comfortable, loose clothing. We rent all the necessary equipment to climb in our facility. If you do not wish to rent climbing shoes, athletic shoes must be worn. Sandals, flip-flops, bare feet, etc. are not permitted. Climbing helmets are offered to everyone free of charge.

  1. 4. What is the difference between Bouldering and Top-Roping?

  2. Bouldering is climbing on relatively low walls. Ropes are not used because of the shortness of the walls. Top-roping is climbing on higher walls. The climber must tie into a climbing rope and have a partner manage the rope (belay) while they climb.

  1. 5. What is belaying anyway?

  2. Belaying is managing the rope for a climber. The person belaying is called a belayer. The belayer is responsible for the climber’s safety. They protect the climber by keeping tension in the rope, catching the climber if they fall, and safely lowering them to the ground when the climb is finished. This essential top-roping skill is taught in our Safety and Belay Class.

  1. 6. What if I already know how to belay?

  2. If you are an experienced belayer, you can take the Experienced Belay Test anytime staff is available. This test is required for your protection and for the safety of all climbers in our facility. To pass the test, you must properly attach the rope to your harness using a follow-through-figure-eight knot, set up an tube style belay device, and demonstrate proper belay technique. All of these skills must be demonstrated without any assistance.  (Minimum belay age is 16).

  1. 7. If I don’t have a partner, does The Climbing Wall provide belayers?

  2. If you are belay certified at our gym, we offer staff belays anytime the top roping area is open, with the exception of Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 5pm-7pm.  Children ages 6-16 can be belayed by our staff during Kids Climb.

8. Are children permitted to climb at your facility?
